How to Download and Install Eclipse IDE

Eclipse is an open-source Integrated Development Environment (IDE). It is one of the powerful editors to write development or automation code and execute the project with many advanced features. Let’s understand how to download and install Eclipse IDE for Java developers on MAC and Windows System.

There are many other IDE like IntelliJ Idea, NETBEANS etc. However, Eclipse is popular among all the IDE for Java development.

You can extend the capabilities of Eclipse IDE by installing plug-ins from the Eclipse Marketplace like GIT, TestNG etc.

Pre-requisites

Eclipse IDE is mostly written in Java and it is a java based application. It requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to run the application.

Please ensure JRE or Java Development Kit (JDK) is installed on your system before installing Eclipse.

Execute below command on Terminal on MAC and on CMD on Windows System to identify Java version.

If java is installed and configured properly, above command list the Java version, JRE version etc.

How to Download and Install Eclipse IDE

Steps to Download Eclipse IDE

  1. Head over to Eclipse Download Page on Eclipse official website.
  2. You should see the latest release of Eclipse. Click on ‘Download Packages’ link.
  3. Select the appropriate package as per your requirement, like for simple Java development choose ‘Eclipse IDE for Java Developers‘ and for enterprise solution with advance feature choose ‘Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers‘.
  4. Click on the download link against the selected package based on the operating system (OS).
  5. In the next page, choose a mirror close to you. Mirrors are the source to download Eclipse. One mirror will be selected automatically.
  6. Click on the download button.
  7. All the above steps are equally applicable to download any other releases of the Eclipse on MAC and Windows operating system.

Steps to Install Eclipse IDE on Mac

  1. Extract the downloaded package.
  2. You should see ‘Eclipse’ icon.
  3. Drag and drop ‘Eclipse’ icon into ‘Applications’ folder on your MAC system. This is how you install applications on MAC.
  4. Go to ‘Applications’, and double click on ‘Eclipse’ program.
  5. Provide workspace directory and click on the launch button to launch the Eclipse.
  6. You should see the Eclipse welcome page.

Steps to Install Eclipse IDE on Windows

  1. Extract the downloaded package.
  2. You should see ‘Eclipse.exe’ icon inside the extracted folder. Double click on EXE to open the Eclipse launcher.
  3. Provide workspace directory and click on the launch button to launch the Eclipse.
  4. You should see the Eclipse welcome page.

Ideally, you don’t need to install Eclipse on Windows OS like any other programs. Hence you will not see Eclipse in ‘Add and Remove Programs’.
